Byproduct: The Laundromat

Funded by a 2012 Rocket Grant and the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts Toyota Alumni Fund, this project cultivates a deeper understanding of socially-engaged art practice in Kansas City. Through small-scale tutorials, curated conversations, and site-specific projects (during which program attendees actually do their laundry), Byproduct connects audiences with art that involves the community in unexpected ways. Events have ranged from experimental jazz concerts to film screenings to soapmaking demonstrations. The Walnut Place Laundromat has served as the venue for Byproduct, which has attracted over 1,300 people to 17 events and programs.
